Introducing… the Louvre Museum

Introducing… the Louvre Museum

Welcome back to the latest in our Introducing series where we give you an insight into the French capital’s best-known landmarks if it’s your first time here plus some quirky facts if you’ve been here before. This time we’re introducing you to the Louvre museum, one of the biggest attractions in Paris and just half an hour on the metro from ACCORD Language School. Ready to explore?

Fast facts

Let’s review some facts that you’ve probably already heard before but just in case you haven’t… the Louvre is both the biggest and the most-visited museum in the world with 15,000 visitors in attendance at any given time. It was originally meant to be a fortress but was turned into a royal palace in the 16th century before becoming a museum in the late 18th century.
If you allocated 30 seconds to each and every item in the Louvre then it would take you 100 days to visit the entire museum (that’s not including breaks, meals or sleep!). It’s home to arguably the most famous painting in the world, the Mona Lisa (we’ll come back to her later), and perhaps the most controversial architectural feature in recent history, the glass pyramid (which the Parisians hated when it first appeared). You can find out more about the history of France and Paris during your French language and culture lessons at ACCORD!

The Louvre Museum during World War II

During the Second World War, the Nazis looted homes and businesses for art all over France. The Louvre was emptied out and used as a storeroom to house all the stolen goods. What happened to all the art housed in the Louvre before the Nazi invasion? Well, Hitler’s army had already begun its systematic looting of artworks from homes and businesses in Germany so the museum’s director, Jacques Jaujard, thought it was only a matter of time before the same happened to his museum. He had 200 trucks carry nearly 2000 boxes of the Louvre’s treasures between August and December 1939, so that when the Nazi soldier’s reached the museums, they were met by empty frames. Despite the artworks having to be moved around several times to keep them out of enemy hands, miraculously none of the Louvre’s treasures were damaged or went missing!

The Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum

Everyone knows the Mona Lisa hangs in the Louvre, but did you know that she was once stolen? Long before security cameras and sensors, an Italian museum worker hid in a storage cupboard so he could stay inside the museum at the end of his shift. Once everyone had left the museum, he stuffed the painting into his jacket, spent the night in the Louvre and walked out the next morning with a masterpiece. The painting wasn’t as famous then as it is now so it took a day or two for people to notice it was missing and it made headlines around the world. Pablo Picasso was suspected of stealing the artwork until the culprit tried to sell it to an Italian art dealer who informed the authorities. The Mona Lisa was found safe and sound… and that’s why she’s so famous today! Depending on the overall level of the class, your teacher may well ask you to write a news article in French covering the great art heist at ACCORD Paris. Whilst we’re on the subject of the Mona Lisa, you may not realise that Da Vinci painted the artwork on two separate occasions so the one hanging in the Louvre may well be the copy he produced at a later date. Mind blown.

The Louvre Museum and its Urban Legends

The Louvre has a lot of history behind it so it’s no surprise that it has its fair share of urban legends that may or may not be true. First up is the 666 myth that there are 666 panes of glass in the glass pyramid (the locals really did not like it). Never fear, there’s no sign of the devil in the pyramid as any mathematician would tell you it wasn’t possible and there are actually 673 window panes. If you’re a fan of Dan Brown then you’ll know that The Da Vinci Code speculates that Mary Magdalene is buried under the inverted pyramid in the Louvre’s underground shopping centre. She probably isn’t but you’ll have fun spotting the people visiting the museum to try to see for themselves! Some visitors and museum workers believe that the corridors at the Louvre are haunted by a mummy called Belphegor. Then a ghost dressed in red has been seen on several occasions in the Tuileries Gardens surrounding the museum and has been described as “totally unthreatening”. Have you ever encountered a ghost at a museum? Share the story with your fellow French students at ACCORD Language School during your French class. Happy ghost hunting!

World Teachers’ Day at ACCORD Paris Tour Eiffel School

World Teachers’ Day at ACCORD Paris Tour Eiffel School

Today is October 5th and today is World Teachers’ Day! It highlights how education can fuel change in our world. It is a beacon of hope that empowers individuals, turns societies around and affects the future. So who is it that fuels this transformation? The devoted teachers who work so hard to inspire people of all ages and share their infectious love for learning.
Let’s take a quick look at the history of World Teachers’ Day and say a big thank you to our wonderful French teachers here at ACCORD Paris French language school.

A potted history

UNESCO launched World Teachers’ Day in 1994 to give the vital role that teachers play in shaping our society the recognition they deserve. It’s more than a celebration of teachers though. October 5th is the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO recommendation regarding the status of teachers and setting the standard for their rights and responsibilities on an international scale. Every year UNESCO uses it as a platform to address issues facing teachers today. The theme for this year’s World Teachers’ Day is “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage.”  The 2023 event puts the spotlight on the significant fall in teachers and how we must make recruitment and retention our focus to put the brakes on the decline.

World Teachers’ Day at ACCORD Paris Tour Eiffel School: Celebrations in Paris

UNESCO has unveiled an original photography exhibition celebrating teachers from all over the world as part of World Teachers’ Day. Not only does the exhibition display portraits and testimonials in recognition of teachers’ devotion, passion and commitment to shaping the future, but it will also present UNESCO’s campaigns to support teachers. Where can you see the exhibition? It’s just a 15 minute walk from ACCORD language school outside the UNESCO Headquarters at 7 Place de Fontenay.

World Teachers’ Day at ACCORD Paris Tour Eiffel School: Celebrating ACCORD’s teachers

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers for everything that they do for our wonderful students in our French language courses. ACCORD language school has had its fair share of challenges in recent years, with the pandemic, lockdown and new premises, but our teachers have always been our students’ rock, providing support and guidance wherever possible. We would like to thank them for sharing our French language, culture, history, traditions and more with our students of all ages and all nationalities. On behalf of all our staff and students, we would like to wish (…) a very happy World Teachers’ Day!

Discover with ACCORD the Spooky Paris

Discover with ACCORD the Spooky Paris

Paris may be known as the City of Lights, but it certainly has a dark side… With Halloween fast approaching, here are a few places to visit and things to do to venture into the French capital’s shadows. Prepare for thrills and chills as you see another side to Paris during your French course at ACCORD language school. Trick or treat? You decide!

Trick!  The Catacombs

Discover with ACCORD French language school the Spooky Paris! This is probably the best-known macabre landmark in Paris… The sign above the gate to the ossuary says it all: “Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort.” The site even set the scene for the 2014 horror film, As Above, So Below. The story began in the 18th century when remains from cemeteries were moved underground due to public health concerns in the city. This site used to be a network of quarries and was consecrated as the “Paris Municipal Ossuary” on April 7th 1786. It has always been known by its nickname, the Catacombs, because of the public’s fascination with Roman catacombs and the aura surrounding them. The site is as deep as a 5-storey building with 243 steps and covering 1.5km. The tour takes around 1.5 hours.
Visitor entrance: Catacombs of Paris, 1 Avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy (place Denfert-Rochereau), 75014 Paris

Treat!  A Halloween Cruise

After your French language course at ACCORD the “Vedettes du Pont Neuf” boat company bring you a real treat for Halloween: a cruise on the River Seine. Get dressed up in a frightfully fabulous outfit, bask in the moonlight and set sail on the dark river with a blood red cocktail in your hand. Listen to terrifying tales about the French capital and uncover the dark secrets behind the famous landmarks you sail past on the 1 hour cruise. Do the monster mash as the DJ plays scarily good tunes and have some good old Halloween fun on October 31st!
Boarding point: Vedettes du Pont Neuf, 1 Square du Vert Galant, 75001 Paris

Trick!  Discover with ACCORD the Spooky Paris: the Père Lachaise Cemetry

The biggest cemetery in Paris is also one of the most haunted places in the French capital: Père Lachaise. You may run into the ghosts of the rock star Jim Morrison (who many claim to have caught wandering around the graveyard on camera), French prime minister Adolphe Thiers (who tugs your clothes if you get too close to his grave), Chopin (who had his heart removed after his death and walled inside a Polish church due to his fear of being buried alive) and Marcel Proust (who roams the cemetery in search of his lover). Are you feeling brave? Let us introduce you to Elisabeth Stroganov who is buried in a mausoleum here. The wealthy Russian died at 39 and left a challenge in her will: anyone brave enough to spend an entire year in her mausoleum would inherit a large sum of money. Many have tried but all have failed… and now it’s illegal to sleep in a mausoleum so that’s a good enough excuse to avoid it!
Père Lachaise: 16 Rue du Repos, 75020 Paris

Treat!  The Choco-Story Halloween Workshop

As the saying goes: “Trick or treat? Trick or treat? Give me something good to eat!” What could be better than a chocolatey treat after all that excitement? Take a tour of the chocolate museum before heading to the workshop to make your own chocolates using ingredients such as chili and garlic as well as a chocolate spider (it is Halloween after all)! The tour and Halloween workshop package is just a 25 minute metro ride away from ACCORD language school.
Discover with the ACCORD Paris Institute the Spooky Paris and go to the Choco-Story, 28 Bd de Bonne Nouvelle, 75010 Paris.

Introducing… Musée de Montmartre

Introducing… Musée de Montmartre

Welcome back to the latest in our Introducing series where we give you an insight into the French capital’s best-known landmarks if it’s your first time here plus some quirky facts if you’ve been here before. This time we’re introducing you to the Musée de Montmartre, a hidden gem of a museum for those in the know! Ready to explore?

The Montmartre museum

The Montmartre Museum was founded just a stone’s throw from the Sacré Coeur in one of the oldest buildings on the Butte Montmartre: the 17th century Maison du Bel Air. Its permanent exhibition takes you on a trip back in time through the history of Montmartre with a unique collection of posters, paintings, drawings and more. Find out how the mills and vineyards gradually disappeared to make way for urbanisation in the 19th century, before artists began to flock here for the local boho lifestyle and buzzing cabarets.

Visit a reconstruction of one of the artist’s studios from the neighbourhood’s heyday at the Musée de Montmartre. The designer Hubert le Gall has worked with well-known establishments to faithfully recreate the apartment/studio that Suzanne Valadon, Maurice Utrillo (Valadon’s son, painter) and André Utter (Valadon’s husband, painter) called home in the early 20th century. Soak up the atmosphere and picture the bohemian artists working and living together right here.

The grounds

The Musée de Montmartre grounds are a haven of peace in the heart of the bustling city. The museum is surrounded by three gardens named after Auguste Renoir. Why Renoir? Because he lived here between 1875 and 1877 and this is where he painted a few of his masterpieces: Le Bal du Moulin de la Galette, La Balancoire and Jardin de la rue Cortot. You can settle down for a bite to eat or a drink at Café Renoir either outside or inside as you gaze at views of the gardens and vineyard. If you fancy visiting the gardens for a bite to eat or a little stroll, it costs 5 Euros without museum admission. The gardens have been renovated according to Renoir’s paintings. They provide a good view of the vineyard, which has existed since the Middle Ages and was replanted in 1933.
A tip from ACCORD Paris: the Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival

Musée de Montmartre: Visitor information
The museum itself is open between 10am and 7pm every day and takes around 1.5 hrs to visit.
The café is open between 11.30am and 6pm.
Musée de Montmartre: 12 rue Cortot, 75018, Paris.

Introducing… the Père Lachaise Cemetery

Introducing… the Père Lachaise Cemetery

Welcome back to the latest in our Introducing series where we give you an insight into the French capital’s best-known landmarks if it’s your first time here plus some quirky facts if you’ve been here before. This time we’re introducing you to the Père Lachaise cemetery (Cimetière du Père-Lachaise), one of the biggest attractions in Paris and just 35 minutes on the metro from Accord Paris language school! Ready to explore?

A bit of background

Not only is it the biggest cemetery in Paris at 44 hectares, it’s also the most visited cemeteries in the world with over 3.5 million visitors a year. It was opened in 1804 by Napoleon and is home to over 300,000 human remains. Père Lachaise has seen battle too with armed combat on two occasions: it was overrun by the Russians during the Napoleonic War in 1814 then 147 workers were killed here during the chaotic Paris Commune in 1871. You can actually see the bullet holes in the “Mur des Fédérés” commemorating the massacre.

Humble beginnings

The cemetery may be famous for being the final resting place for some of the world’s most famous names, but things didn’t start so well for Père Lachaise. It was thought to be too far away from the city so not many funerals were held here. It also hadn’t been blessed by the Church so many Roman Catholics refused to be buried here. That meant there were only 13 burials here in 1804 when it first opened. 1817 marked a turning point when the French authorities made the smart move of moving the remains of the famous 17th century playwright Molière and the fable writer Jean de la Fontaine to Père Lachaise. Although there is much debate about whether they really are buried here, the move saw flocks of Parisians request burial sites here and today’s there’s even a waiting list for a plot.

Dead famous

The cemetery is home to famous people and equally famous graves. Some of the tombstones are recognised as “historical monuments” so have listed status. It’s like being in a museum! One of the famous names is Jim Morrison from The Doors, who is buried here and watched over by a security guard since his bust was stolen. Another is Oscar Wilde whose tomb is covered in lipstick and even a glass barrier can’t stop visitors from kissing the stone! Keep an eye out for Louis-Sébastien Gourlot’s grieving widow… you can’t miss her (she’s painted gold!). Cemeteries can be creepy places and Père Lachaise is no stranger to the macabre: the Raspal family mausoleum has the Grim Reaper trying to get in through the window whilst the Robertson family tomb is all winged skulls and creepy owls. You’ve been warned!
Notable figures in the arts buried at Père Lachaise include Colette, Frédéric Chopin, Édith Piaf, Marcel Proust, Georges Méliès, Marcel Marceau, Sarah Bernhardt, Georges Bizet, Sir Richard Wallace… and many more.

Visitor information

You can pick up a free map at the Conservation Centre at the cemetery’s entrance so you can find your way around the maze-like landmark and visit the famous tombs. Entrance is free and the cemetery is open all year round. Please remember that this is a cemetery so no picnics, jogging, alcohol or anything deemed disrespectful is allowed here. Your closest metro stops are Père Lachaise and Gambetta.

A tip from ACCORD Paris: Let’s uncover the “passages couverts”.

Past and current French students may already have been on one of ACCORD language school’s “sorties pédagogiques” and explored the subject of “passages couverts”. If you’re reading this blog then you’re obviously eager to relive the experience or get a taster before you visit Paris for your French course at ACCORD. Join us and let’s uncover them together!
Passages couverts” translates to “covered passages” and are, essentially, hidden walkways with glass roofs designed in the 19th century. People would come here to get shelter from the rain and pass the time with shops, places to eat, drink and more. Fast forward to the 21st century and they’re still as popular as ever among tourists and locals alike. There are 20 or so still standing today and here are a few that you don’t want to miss.

1. Galerie Vivienne

This is quite possibly the prettiest of the “passages couverts” with its polished mosaics, glossy wood, sparkling glass and wrought iron interior leafy with plants. The walkway was built in 1873 on Rue Vivienne in the 2nd arrondissement and the fashion designer Takada Kenzo put it back on the map in the 1970s when he chose it to host his inaugural fashion show and his first shop. Feast your eyes on the shop windows, enjoy a spot of wine tasting at Legrand Filles et Fils and soak up the magic at Jousseaume, one of the oldest bookshops in Paris.

2. Passage du Grand Cerf

Welcome to the tallest “passage couvert” in Paris with its 12m high glass roof. This one is a hidden gem in the 2nd arrondissement that’s off the tourist trail (you can thank us later). It opened in 1825 but was left down-at-heel by the end of the 19th century due to a lack of profit among its traders. Fast forward 100 years and it was given a major renovation and even had a starring role in the 60s French classic, Zazie dans le métro. This is the place to go hunt down antiques, unearth up-and-coming designers and meet talented artisans before a well-earned break at Le Pas Sage (see what they did there?!).

3. Passage des Panoramas

It’s time to head over to the 9th arrondissement to visit the oldest “passage couvert” in Paris. Passage des Panoramas is so iconic that it even appeared in Zola’s novel Nana (remember? Count Muffat goes for a walk to look at the arcade’s shop windows). It became a hotspot among stamp collectors so it’s no surprise that the pretty walkway is lined with stamp traders and vintage postcard shops. If you’re feeling peckish and fancy eating somewhere special, make a beeline for Victoria Station and settle down in its plush velvet train carriage. All aboard!

4. Passage Jouffroy

If you exit Passage des Panoramas onto Boulevard Montmartre then cross the road, you’ll stumble straight into Passage Jouffroy. It’s like a two for one deal on “passages couverts”! This 19th century walkway was the first in Paris to be built entirely from iron and glass before a full renovation in 1987 gave it an opulent marble floor. What sets this arcade apart from the rest is that it’s home to a museum: the Musée Grévin. It’s one of the oldest wax museums in Europe and home to 500 wax figures, a mirage room and magic theatre… put it on your to-do list if you’re taking a family French course at ACCORD language school!

A tip from ACCORD Paris: the Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival

A tip from ACCORD Paris: the Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival.

If you’re at ACCORD Paris in early October or a regular visitor, then you’re bound to have heard of the Montmartre Grape Harvest Festival: the “Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre. It’s the city’s third biggest festival (after “Nuit Blanche” and “Paris Plage”) and is held for five days over the second weekend in October. So join over half a million festivalgoers between October 11th and 15th to celebrate all things wine!

A little history

The festival may have been celebrating Montmartre’s vines and area for 90 years but the first vine stocks were actually planted in the 12th century. The nuns at Montmartre Abbey planted them to make wine and three quarters of the Butte de Montmartre (hill) was actually covered in vines before it became a hotbed for construction and residential life. The vines disappeared completely by 1928 but were revived by a project to stop land on the corner of Rue des Saules et Saint-Vincent being built on in 1933. Local celebrities launched a campaign that saw countless councils gift Montmartre vine stocks which Paris Town Hall planted. The following year saw the festival officially launch to celebrate the local winemaking legacy and the latest vintage.

Wine and dine

It’s a wine festival so there are going to be lots of wine-based things to do. The festivities begin on the 11th with a children’s disco at 2pm at Jardins de l’Éole then a launch night at 7pm at the Town Hall to get things off with a bang. On the 14th you can get stomping at 10am and take part in the traditional “Ban des Vendanges” where you tread the grapes with your fellow festivalgoers. There are guided tours of the Vignes du Clos Montmartre plus a food market around the Sacré Coeur all day and every day of the festival. The headliner is the great parade on October 14th which sees over fifty brotherhoods from all over France flock to the streets with bands providing the soundtrack.

No pain, no gain

As part of the Paris 2024 Olympics, this year’s festival is getting sporty to bring us fine wine and good times! There’s a 5km night race starting at 8pm from the bottom of the Butte. It’s free and there’s only one rule: look bold and bright! A guided tour introduces you to Art and the Olympics in Montmartre back when Paris last hosted the games in the early 20th century on October 12th at 5.30pm. If you’ve ever wondered what goes through an elite athlete’s head during an event then head to Jardin René Binet at 6pm and watch a dramatic performance with a difference. 2024 is the first year that breakdancing is an official Olympic sport so get a taste of it at Parc Chapelle Charbon on the afternoon of October 15th.

In the best possible taste

Around 1500 bottles of Clos Montmartre wine are made every year and auctioned off to raise funds for local charities. But that doesn’t mean you’ll never get to try it for yourself! You can sample it at the festival, take a private VIP Montmartre tour (including a trip to the vineyard itself) or visit Montmartre Tourist Information and pick up a little souvenir bottle for around 50 Euros.
